Ted Carmichael, Ph.D.

Ted Carmichael holds a B.S. in Business Administration, an M.S. in Computer Science, and a Ph.D. in Information Technology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He is a founding member of the Complex Systems Institute at UNC Charlotte: a multi-disciplinary research center with faculty from more than ten different departments across five colleges, including: Computer Science, Biology, Philosophy, Economics, Political Science, Literature, Theater Science, and Sociology. He is also the founding co-Chair for the AAAI CAS Symposia series, which held its third annual meeting in November of 2011. Dr. Carmichael is currently an Assistant Research Professor in the College of Computing and Informatics at UNC Charlotte.

His dissertation work was on the creation of a general, domain-agnostic CAS (Complex Adaptive System) computer simulation model; and the application of this model to both soft-tissue cancer (biology) and political dissent in a polity (sociology). This work won the Graduate Dean's Distinguished Dissertation Award, in large part due to the multi-disciplinary nature of this general CAS tool.

More recently, Dr. Carmichael extended this general model to simulate fundamental phenomena in ecology: specifically, multiple predator/prey dynamics in a marine ecosystem. Current work is underway in applying lessons from this ecological model towards understanding competition and price structure in modern economies. Dr. Carmichael has also recently joined a team of researchers at UNC Charlotte in the planning stage for a five-year, $12 million dollar "sustainability" endeavor. This project will draw on expertise from multiple departments across multiple institutions, to create models, simulations, and advanced analytical tools that couple human behavior, the environment, and the local economy in the context of sustainable practices.
